Review vehicle: Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TDI 170 SE

Audi's model range expands again with a five-door Sportback version of its A5. The Sportback hatch joins the existing Coupe and Cabriolet models in the A5 range. Sitting above the A4 saloon, the Sportback is longer and wider and its hatchback configuration provides more practicality - although boot capacity with the seats up is the same as the saloon; and it's only a four-seater. Tested here with the 170PS 2.0-litre TDI engine with start/stop fuel-saving technology.

• Lip on rear boot means loading practicality reduced
• Tailgate lifts high - check you can close it!
• Steering feels lifeless, especially around the dead-ahead
• Engine not as spritely as the power suggests
