Review vehicle: Skoda Octavia New 1.4 TSI Elegance 5dr

Facelifted version of Skoda's brilliant Octavia. New model answers criticisms of the outgoing car's bland looks with a fresh grille styled like the bigger Skoda Superb, while there's a new centre console inside. Best news is the VW Group's 122bhp 1.4-litre turbo petrol is now available. Tested here in Elegance trim.

What's hot

• That turbo engine...
• ...Seamless power delivery means it just feels like a larger unit
• ...while 200Nm of torque means it's almost as flexible as a diesel
• Pretty eco-friendly too with 40mpg plus and CO2 emissions of 148g/km...
• ...which qualifies it for a 20% writing down allowance
• Ride is supremely comfortable and handling is tidy
• Long-distance ability is as good as a Mondeo
• New grille and headlights look good
• Cabin quality and design are both first class
• Climate control and alloy wheels are standard
• Vast boot and lots of passenger space
• Excellent residuals

What's not

• Driving experience is comfortable rather than sporty
• Despite the styling tweaks, it's still no head-turner
• Err...that's about it

Road Test Rating
It's always been excellent family transport but thanks to the new 1.4 TSI engine, the Octavia just got even better. Few cars are such good all-rounders, but the Skoda Octavia shows rivals how it should be done. Factor in a Skoda's legendary dealer experience and it's one of the best business cars you could possibly buy.
