ENTRY-LEVEL 1.6-litre FSI petrol engined model sets out to prove there's no weak link in the new Mk6 VW Golf range. Relatively small unit produces just 100bhp and is equipped to a basic standard. But the pay-off is a starting price of just 14,500. On sale now.

What's hot

• Virtually everything. The latest Golf is a great all-rounder...
• ...with sturdy build quality and lots of space inside
• Small engine needs lots of revs to provide its best...
• ...but thanks to excellent refinement it never sounds strained
• And, although there only five gears, motorway cruising is quiet
• Superb driving position and great comfort
• Steering is precise, grip strong, body control excellent
• Ride is simply brilliant with amazing bump absorption
• Strong residuals

What's not

• Certainly not fast or head-turning to look at
• Combined fuel economy of 39.8mpg...
• ...and CO2 of 166g/km unimpressive against diesels
• It also only qualifies for 10% writing down allowance
• Steering isn't Focus sharp
• Although air-con is standard, alloys aren't

Road Test Rating
Another great new Golf. The 1.6-litre model may not be fast, but nor does it feel slow, and while high mileage motorway drivers will be better off with a six-speed diesel, it copes far better than you might expect. Add in a classy cabin and great driving dynamics and you've got an excellent business tool.
